A filling has been placed in your root canal–treated tooth to restore its structure and function. It is normal to experience mild tenderness or sensitivity in the tooth and surrounding gum tissues for a few days following the procedure, as the area begins to heal.
Root Canal Aftercare Procedure
Follow a soft diet for the rest of the day.
Rinse with warm (tolerable hot) water for 5 minutes every hour to reduce tenderness.
Take all prescribed medications as directed.
Rest the tooth for 24 hours, then gradually return to normal use.
Avoid clenching, grinding, or keeping your teeth together.
If your bite feels uneven or the tooth feels “high,” contact us for an adjustment.
Maintain good oral hygiene, but be gentle around the treated area for 24–48 hours.
Take 3–4 tablets of ibuprofen (e.g., Advil or Nuprin) every 6 hours for at least 48 hours, and do not take on an empty stomach.
A crown or permanent restoration is usually needed, as root canal–treated teeth can become weaker and more prone to fracture.
